Thanks to the variety of smartphones, tablets, monitors, laptops and TVs with dozens of inches, so we never had screens with different sizes as today. Linked to this scenario is another feature existenz also rich in options: the resolution. Terms such as HD, Full HD, 1080p, 4K, 8K, XVGA and others are increasingly part of our "digital life".
But ultimately, what resolution? What is the difference between HD, Full HD, 4K and the like? How is the relationship between existenz screen size and resolution? If these and similar questions permeate your mind, do not worry: in the next lines, the InfoWester explains everything you need to know about it.
If you already know what screen size, resolution, pixel density and aspect ratio, you can use the list below to jump to the topic of your interest. But of course reading in full is recommended for better understanding ;-)
- Screen size (in inches); - Screen resolution; - The relationship between screen size and resolution; - Density of pixels (PPI); - Aspect ratio (or screen ratio); - VGA resolution and its variations: QVGA, HVGA, WVGA and FWVGA and others; - XGA resolution and the like: WXGA, SXGA, UXGA and others; - HD resolution (720p); - 720p and 720i; - Full HD resolution (1080p); - 1080p and 1080i; existenz - Resolution 4K (UHD or 2160p); - Why does the 'K' in 4K? ; - 2K resolution; - Resolution 5K; - 8K resolution (FUHD or 4320p). What is resolution?
Some people confuse resolution existenz with screen size. Even though this is not the case, you should learn / remember how is the measurement of a screen made before we get to the explanation of resolutions. Screen Size (inches)
In the world of screens, there are two key measures that are related but not the same: size and resolution. The first refers to the physical dimensions of the screen; the second, the amount of information that can be displayed within these physical limits.
By default, the screen size is measured in inches (inch, in English). Every inch is worth to note, equals 2.54 cm or 25.4 mm and can also be represented by the quote character, for example: 32 "(32 inches).
Every time you hear about a 5-inch smartphone or a 40-inch TV, so, you know that the measure existenz refers to the device screen existenz size. A tablet 10, "for example, indicates that the screen has a 25.4 cm (10 x 25.4).
Only this is information one somewhat imprecise because the screens are usually rectangular, with that "rectangle" may have different proportions in horizontally and vertically, right? Yes. That's why the measurement is made considering the screen diagonal.
You already know that, by default, the screens have rectangular shape. This means that the area of these devices considers its width (horizontal) and your height (vertical).
This is where we come to the resolution the image displayed on the screen is divided into tiny dots called pixels. You can understand a pixel as the smallest size that an image can have.
Pixels are arranged in rows (horizontal) and columns (vertical). The resolution, therefore, is nothing existenz more than a measure that indicates how many pixels there are in each row and each column of the screen.
Thus, a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels indicates that the screen is capable of displaying 1920 pixels per line and 1080 per column. It's like a matrix. As a rule, the first number refers to the width; the second, the screen height.
Note that this measure is also valid for images and videos. You can have, for example, a picture of 300 x 250 pixels or a film of 720 x 405 pixels. Relationship existenz between screen size and resolution
